WHY Commitment is so important

Commitment is not just important, it's scary - it scares the living daylights out of most people.

When the word commitment is mentioned, we start thinking hard...difficult...accountable..."oh SH#T".

Tell me.... do you work hard?

If I asked you to spend 8 or 10 hours a day sweeping streets - How would you feel?

Surely THAT is hard work.

Chances are, you'd run a mile.

So how do we change our perception, our understanding of what commitment means... and what HARD means?

Because really, it's one of the most important factors in determining your future success.

Without commitment, it's way too easy for you to give up, to turn around and say "I'll do it tomorrow," to make excuses, to never get the job done, never get the project finished, never receive the benefit of that event in your life.

So, if the hard and scary stuff stops us from committing, what would get us to commit?

Now, the simplest way to answer that, is to look back on your life and say "what commitments did I make previously, that I've managed to keep to this day?"

Maybe you committed to marriage and you're still happily married today?

Maybe you committed to completing a university degree?

If there's an education program that you've been through in life, and you've got to the other end, you were committed – you got there, and you received the benefit.

You see, when you commit, that's it – you're doing it. There's no "oh I'll give it a try."

Tell me if I'm wrong...

... When I see some of the reality T.V shows these days, my view of marriageis challenged. My view is it's a commitment for life, but maybe that's not the institution that many people today are committing to, at least not to the same level that I did.

In those cases, I would say even though they went through the act of marriage, if they were only trying it, then they weren't committed.

If you want a successful marriage, can I suggest that before you actually exchange your vows, you get a commitment from the other person that they're actually committed to doing this, not just to trying it?

The crazy thing is, there's actually an argument that not committing to something is actually harder work than committing to it.

Let me explain...

When you're truly committed to something, you wake up in the morning, and every minute that you're awake during that day, you are engaged.

You know what's required of you.

The choices you make are relatively easy, because they're in line with the commitment that you've made.

When you're uncommitted – say, perhaps you've downloaded an online course – and you say "I think I want to do it, but I'm not sure" every day that goes by you're still not sure whether you should be doing that or not.

As a result... you're not fully engaged. You have to make a choice each day... Do i do it or don't I?

You have greater choice..., you can do the course, or you can find something else to do. But that means that you're bringing in lots of other options.

Should you watch a movie?

Go for a walk?

However, when you're committed, you might say "I'm going to complete this course, and I'm going to complete it this week. There's 5 modules and I'm going to do 1 module every day." – life then suddenly becomes simple.

It's no longer hard...

You wake up in the morning, you do the module, you finish it, and you give yourself a pat on the back.

It was easy.

Conversely, when you don't know what you're committed to, you have absolutely no idea what choice you should be making.

In fact, you don't even know how you're making your choices.

So, what about those people who say they can't make commitments?

Well, let me throw this on you...

You're making commitments every moment of the day.

If you're not very good at making commitments, then you're committed to not making commitments.

If you make excuses for why you can't make a commitment, then you're committed to making excuses.

So, can we all agree, here and now, that everybody has the capability to make a commitment.

The bigger question is: How do you stay committed to the right things?

Starting with the question "what exactly are the right things?"

Well, that depends on your circumstances in life...

... If your goal right now is to start a new business, and you know that the first thing you need to do is set up the business, then get yourself committed to taking the steps to do exactly that.

If your business is already established, but it doesn't have enough clients coming through  the door, then commit now to bringing more clients through the door.

The moment that you've made that commitment is the moment that you'll start finding the answers and alternative solutions required to achieve your goal.

Remind yourself of that commitment every single day, and like clockwork, your focus will move towards ways to bring in more clients each day.

Bringing back the point that I made earlier on... what if that's hard work?

Is it scary?

Does the thought of having to bring more clients in make it scary?

So scary that you refuse to commit to it?

Well congratulations, at least you've now acknowledged it....

Just like the alcoholic that stands up in front of everybody on their first visit, and acknowledges that they are an alcoholic – that's the commitment - that's the acknowledgement.

If you're scared of bringing more clients through the door, maybe you're scared of spending the money and failing, or something going wrong and making you look stupid.

Acknowledge that.

Face the fear and do it anyway.

If that was your example, I'd ask  "How is life going to look in the future if you don't put those adverts out and you don't bring more leads in?"

Wow... Now that is REALLY scary.

If it becomes scarier than the thought of running the ads in the first place, and all of a sudden, you're motivated and ready to make the commitment to bringing in more people.

Chances are, something has just clicked in your head right now, and maybe you're getting the point that I'm working towards.

You see, the reasons we're scared of commitment (it's hard -  it's painful etc) are false... it's the other way around... it's NOT being commited that makes life hard and painful.

What if you could turn it around... to KNOW with certainty that not commiting to something would be  even scarier and harder than actually committing to it?

Maybe then you could break the project up into smaller parts, so that they're a little bit easier to complete and to commit to.

Commitment is nothing more than building a bridge between two points....

In its simplest form, if you wanted to go to the shops this afternoon because there's no food in the cupboard, you're committed to going out and getting that food.

To move from where you are right now... to the shops... and back to your kitchen.

The thought of going hungry, or going without, is scarier than going out and getting the food in the first place.

Incidentally, the mere sensation of getting hungry gets you committed.

It also gets you to be more creative.

Maybe there is no car in the driveway, so you must walk to the shops, and that makes it a bit more painful than if the car was there.

The creativity steps in on autopilot, and you order a pizza.

It might not be the healthiest solution, but at least you've kept your commitment to breaking your hunger.

So just how committed are you to living your dream life... to building an amazing business?

There is no 'trying' to live the dream, and no 'trying' to build an amazing business.

That is setting yourself up for failure right at the beginning.
